Gajapati is one of Odisha's southern districts located on the border of Andhra Pradesh. Mostly mountainous, Gajapati is primarily inhabited by various clans of Sabara tribes. Parlakhemundi, the district headquarter is a culturally vibrant city. The erstwhile kings of Paralakhemudi had played a vital role not only in the formation of separate Odisha State but also in the overall development of education, health and infrastructure. Mahendragiri at 1500 m from MSL is one of Odisha's unique biospheres and land of myths and legends. Gajapati is also known as one of the largest Tibetan refugee settlements at Chandragiri in Mohana block. Gajapati is largely rural and least industrialized. Home to some of India’s spectacular mountains, waterfalls, and verdant valleys, the cultural life in Gajapati has not much changed. The Sauras are one of the finest souls with countless stories of adaptation, history, aspiration and shamanic practices. Their wall murals called 'Idital' are pictograms that have continued from the Stone Age. Their terrace farming shows their ingenuity in creating cultural landscapes for sustainable living.
