Elephant Wilderness

The heartland of Odisha is a significant elephant territory. Close to bustling Bhubaneswar, the capital of Odisha is Chandaka Elephant Sanctuary nestled on the fringe of the Eastern Ghats Hills. Chandaka has legacies going back to the time of Emperor Ashoka. The 2nd-1st century BCE Jain cave clusters at Khandagiri and Udayagiri hills in Bhubaneswar vividly depict the wilderness of Chandaka Forest of yore. It is believed that elephants from Chandaka had been used by the warriors of Kalinga during the infamous Kalinga War. To the northwest of Bhubaneswar are major elephant corridors of Hindol, Kapilash and Satkosia Gorge.
